Top Ten Tuesday [19]

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that allows bloggers to share their top ten lists for that week’s topics

Top Ten Tropes I'm Sick Of

1 - Love Triangles - This one seems to be winding down, or at least it hasn't been in the books I'm reading. But it's super annoying when the main conflict in the book is which boy the main character wants to be with

2 - Female Protagonist - I know there was a big push because 20-30 years ago there were 'no' female protagonists, so there was this whole equality movement.  Great, we now have books from a female point of view.  But it's not equal, I want to read some books from a boy's point of view!  They're few and far between, and sadly pretty much non-existent in fantasy.

3 - Insta-love - Ugh, this is the worst.  It's not real, stop pretending that it is.  It's a lazy form of writing where the author says "I want them to meet during the book, and I want them to be romantically involved...I don't know how to get from A to B, so love at first sight! Done!"  Learn how to develop characters people!  Crushes are fine at first sight, but let the characters get to know each other before they're madly in love and doing stupid things for each other.

4 - Zombies - I was never a huge fan of zombies to start with, but then practically any sci-fi book had to do with zombies.  The only time I actually wished that it was zombies was Allegiant, that at least would have been a more tolerable ending.

5 - Vampires - Same as zombies, vampires are the fantasy equivalent these days.  I love vampires, they're really cool.  However, enough is enough.  There are plenty of other mythological beings that could serve the same purpose.

6 - Bad Science - This drives me insane.  I hate the Divergent series because of it.  Across the Universe was ruined because of it.  If you're going to write a sci-fi book KNOW YOUR SCIENCE!!!!!!!

7 - Lack of Parents (or other adult figures) - Where are these kids parents?  Sometimes there's a plausible explanation for them not being there, but it's rare.  Even rarer is when the plausible explanation actually effects the characters, like they miss their parents.  Even if the parents aren't around, there are still no adults around, at all.  Teenage kids rule the world! You don't live past 18, because then you're an adult! And, as we all know, adults are totally boring and no one wants to be one.

8 - 'Hot' Characters - Can we just have normal characters? Please?  The main girl doesn't have to be drop dead sexy, or have a best friend who is that she pales in comparison to.  And the love interest doesn't have to be the cutest boy who ever lived.  Just give me realistic characters.

9 - Pure Evil Characters - I like gray area, it's more realistic that way.  There are very few, if any, truly evil people in the world.  I won't say there weren't any because of people like Hitler and Pol Pot.  But they're few and far between and there's no way a 16 year old girl would be able to do anything to overthrow them or change them.  No, there's no redemption for these characters, because how can you redeem someone who is pure evil?

10 - Forgiving - If the main character's best friend or love interest does something completely unforgivable, by the end of the book all is forgiven and they live happily ever after.  There is no such thing as loosing friends or breaking up with your insta-love boyfriend in the YA-verse.

  2. Great list! #1 and 3- so over done. Couldn't agree more. Give it a rest!

I remember when fantasy was all guys, so it is nice to have female protagonists, but balance is good.
